Metis Nation of Saskatchewan Self Government Agreement

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan (MNS) Self-Government Agreement is a historic agreement between the Government of Canada and the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan that recognizes the inherent right of the Métis people to self-government. This agreement was signed on April 17, 2019, by the MNS and the federal and provincial governments.

The Métis people, who are one of the three Indigenous groups in Canada, have faced the effects of colonialism, discrimination, and marginalization. The MNS has been working towards self-government for many years, and this agreement is a significant step towards that goal. It recognizes the Métis Nation as a distinct culture and provides them with the authority to develop their own laws, policies, and programs.

The agreement covers a wide range of areas, including governance, citizenship, lands and resources, economic development, education, and health. It outlines the framework for the Métis Nation government and provides them with the tools to establish their own institutions, including legislative and executive bodies. The MNS will also have the power to levy taxes and negotiate with other governments on behalf of their citizens.

The agreement also recognizes the Métis Nation`s rights and interests in lands and resources. It provides for the transfer of certain lands and resources to the Métis Nation and requires the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan to consult with the Métis Nation on matters that may affect their rights or interests.

Economic development is another important aspect of the agreement. It recognizes the Métis Nation`s right to participate in the economy and provides for the establishment of an economic development corporation to promote Métis-owned businesses and support economic growth.

Education and health are also covered in the agreement. The MNS will have the authority to establish their own education and health systems that reflect their unique needs and cultural values.

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Self-Government Agreement is a significant milestone for the Métis people. It recognizes their distinct culture and provides them with the tools and authority to govern themselves. This agreement is a positive step towards reconciliation and the recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
